Cafe Rouge Printworks - reader comments

"I visited Cafe Rouge a couple of years ago when it first opened with my fiance to celebrate our 1st year anniversary. The food and service was impeccable, you couldn't fault the place. Cafe Rouge quickly became my favourite place to eat. Like the reviewer below, I also went last Valentines day with my fiance knowing that it was a safe bet. It was appalling! The night started off great, our starter was excellent but then we waited around 1 hour for our main course. It turned out that the waiter who served us went home, and didn't bother to tell any other waiter about us. After complaining the manager came over to apologise. Our food finally arrived but it was luke warm. We didn't see the manager again after we ate our food, and we ended up paying the full amount of money and going home! I thought that would have been a one off thing but after visiting Cafe Rouge last week, the service was horrible, the food was adequate. They have a long way to go to get back in my good books!" - Roz, Manchester 5/01/08 (visited on a monday afternoon)

"I wish I had a lot of positive things to say about Cafe Rouge because it looked so promising, but I'm afraid there was nothing particularly special about the food. I ordered a medium steak which arrived well done, which was tough and dry. It wouldn't surprise me if my food had been standing for at least ten minutes before it was served. It took them almost 45 minutes to serve dessert, which was a bit boring. They did give us a complimentary bottle of house wine (albeit the cheapest) but I was in no position to forgive them for ruining the evening. I wouldn't bother wasting my time going again... after all, the decor's the only decent thing about the place!" - Louise Anne Pritchard, Heywood 30/11/07 (visited on tuesday evening)

"Went for valentines day, was sorely disappointed. Took 25 mins for starters to come, 45 mins more for main course, and over an hour on top till dessert came. They fobbed us off with a free glass of the cheapest house wine that was available on the menu. Many people just left without paying due to the terrible service. Had to ask 4 times, approximately every 15 mins, about the desserts to remind the waiter. After an hour and getting gradually more frustrated, as the night was being spoiled, it came to a head with a waiter who got abused, I must admit I was a little harsh to him and it wasnt totally his fault. The waiting staff swapped shifts 3/4 of the way through our meal and the new waiter didnt seem to know what was going on. The food was overcooked, yet cold when it finally arrived. The desserts were less than mediocre at best and the starters were lousy to open with. Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and I will never be going back. Blacklisted for life." - andrew naylor, manchester 30/11/07 (visited on valentine's day evening)
