Brasserie Chez Gerard French Restaurant - reader comments

"Decor a bit too modern for my liking, trying to be more than it is - the place didn't have enough atmosphere for me. I would recommend Pastilla de Legumes, very tasty! - but a bit disappointing that it only came with about a tablespoon of the yogurt and mint dip! My King Prawn Kebabs were good quality, fresh ingredients and well cooked. However the couscous was a bit bland and too buttery. There were unfortunately hardly any vegeterian options (only meat I eat is fish) - only about 2 fully vegeterian options I think and about 4 others with fish. So if you're a veggie, not the best place to go for an evening meal. Overall though my party was pleased with the taste of their food though it was nothing special. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for young children in the evening however, bit stuffy and quiet atmosphere." - a slotwinski, surrey 27/10/07 (visited on a sunday evening)

"Didn't like the open salt and pepper pots on the table that everyone dipped their fingers in. Not at all hygenic (people dont always wash their hands when they go to the loo). We asked for the pepper grinder which on one occasion they brought to the table, on another visit they said they didn't have one. This lets them down badly as it needs to be changed. Everyone should be entitled to season their food if they wish and this should be put right." - lynn boardman, stockport 21/08/07 (visited on a friday evening)

"Very rude bar man but he forgot to add our drinks to the bill so that was great!! My friend and I ordered the same steak but they were clearly two different types of steak. Mine was full of fat and I couldn't eat half of it whilst her's was lovely and lean. Not fair :-( We used to love eating in the old Chez Gerard and we cried when it closed down. The brasserie doesn't have the same atmosphere and the staff weren't as nice" - clare, ashton-under-lyne 19/7/07 (visited on a thurs evening)

"My starter of mushroom and poached egg was completly cold and the mushroom was TINY!! I thought that this was the way it was meant to be so I didn't complain at the time, However i was talking to my friend who also had the same starter on a different occasion and she said her's was hot and her mushroom was very big! The olive cous cous is gorgous and the chicken tagine was delicious, the waffle dessert is also very yum!" - rani kuar, manchester 19/6/07 (visited on a tuesday evening)

"The service was very slow and an apology only came for this when the main courses arrived. As we were in a group obviously out for lunch from work I would have expected to be warned of the wait for food up front. The waiting staff were very obviously new and did not know the menu at all. They did give us 50% off the food for it being late - but I will not return!" - katie amos, manchester 7/5/07 (visited on a wednesday lunch)

Trusted Reviewer "I enjoyed my evening at the Chez Gerrard, it is very pleasant, well situated and definitely a place to recommend!" - shelagh spiteri, cheshire 6/5/07 (visited on a saturday evening)
