On The Alley Manchester - reader comments

"At
the time the group I was with thought it was a reasonably
nice restaurant, not the best but adequate. I wouldn't go
back. "

"After
reading Manchester Restaurants review, I was looking forward to
trying Grill On The Alley. I travel with work extensively and am lucky
enough to have tried Kobe Beef in Tokyo so was instantly excited about
the thought of a local restaurant serving it. I was impressed with
the beautiful decor and the superb black
& white photographs of Manchester that adorned the walls.
The staff were also very friendly, although as you
say, not the most efficient - there was a number of business diners
who, obviously in a rush to get back to the office, gave up waiting
for attention and decided to pay at the till. As it was lunch time,
I opted for the Kobe Burger opposed to the full steak. I was extremely
disappointed. The meat was so chargrilled it was burnt black
and tasted no better than the meat you'd find at a Cafe Rouge or the
like. On raising it with the helpful waiter though he instantly took
it back and another one, complete with even more chips, was produced,
this time cooked a lot better and tasting very nice.
The manager supplied us with free drinks and couldn't have been more
apologetic so all was forgiven. I would return, although I'd love
to see raw Kobe on the menu, which is certainly the best I've ever
tasted this fine meat. "

"Great
atmosphere, helpful and professional staff.
They have a great selection of steaks, burgers and seafood
as well as loads of other things. Would be a lovely place for a large
group to enjoy a top notch meal."

"If
you like your meat, then you'll love Grill On The Alley. their premium
cuts are amongst the best in town and there's even Kobe Beef available
for real steak connoisseurs (£50 for the 8 oz fillet or a
more affordable £16.95 for a Kobe Burger). Ostrich Fillet,
Suckling Pig, Lamb, Tuna, Oysters and Chicken join beef on the menu,
all grilled over large flames in the open kitchen. With 15 veggie
dishes available too, there's something for everybody.
Located
in the premises vacated by the city centre branch of Est Est Est
(part of the same chain), this is a plush backstreet gem that is
welcoming (and as busy) as its predecessor. You walk into the bar
area, which is beautifully decorated and offers a cocktail list
equally as impressive. The
dining area is also wonderfully furnished and the atmosphere is
always fantastic. You can see the chefs working away in the kitchen
and there's a lobster tank if you're feeling cruel and want to hand
pick your meal.
On our numerous visits, service has always been very friendly, if
not the most efficient, and the food is consistently enjoyable.
The Kobe Beef Fillet is highly recommended if you're rich (or mad)
enough to shell out £50 for one steak, even if it is widely
acknowledged as the finest meat in the world. The poor man's version,
the Kobe Burger (£16.95), is not as good as the excellent
Steak Sandwich with Emmental Cheese, which comes highly recommended.
That said, we always seem to plump for the generally colder and
tender Kobe Burger on every visit. Where else in town can you eat
a burger made from beef that's said to be hand-raised on beer, given
regular massages and rubbed down with Sake?"

"Good
restaurant. The staff took a long time to take our orders
but when they did, the food arrived really fast. As the food came
I got asked if I wanted some sauces for my chips. I asked for Ketchup
but the waitress never came back with it. When halfway through the
meal I asked another waiter for the Ketchup, he looked at me quite
surprised (like it wasnt normal to offer ketchup to the customers)
but he was nice about it and got me a full bottle of ketchup for the
last 5 chips on my plate :o)"

"Whilst
eating the staff changed shifts, where we were then landed with a
waitress who didn't seem at all interested in customer service
which was a shame. It did seem to have spoilt the meal and the hard
work that the first waitress had gone too. Obviously she didnt want
to be there on a saturday evening."

"We
came with friends - we had recommended the restaurant to them as my
other half maintains their lobster holding tank and he was always
on at me to go and see what the food was like - he says that the staff
are there really early in the morning, preparing the chips by hand!!!
We were amazed at how busy it was, but not too cramped
- the Carpaccio starter was out of this world, the
service was just right and it was a real 'grown up'
night out, the staff made us feel very special, they
tended to our every need and even called us a cab when we were ready
to go home. We can't wait to go back again soon."

"I
have been here twice now - first time (with my partner) was good enough
for me to take my brand new work colleagues there after the first
day of our new office - they loved it. I will be
back as the menu is one of those where I could eat everything on it.
The staff are friendly and knowledgable and the decor
is great. Definitely one of my favourites in Manchester at
the moment, good tasting, good value, great food and drink."
