Lights
Of India Restaurant Manchester - reader comments

"The
waiter had no communication skills and the food
was bland with a capital B - no difference between the taste
of Bhuna and Dopiaza."

"I
visted the restaurant early on Sunday evening and was very
impressed, everything was great. Fantastic value
for money. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Thanks
for a great night."

"I
visited there with my work collegues on Friday 7th December - the
atmosphere was relaxed and lively. I had one of the
signature dishes (Chicken Manpasand). It was very nice...
highly recommended. The owner was very nice and polite. We visted
at 8.00pm and it was very busy, I even spotted Manchester
City's manager there... Overall good value for money
and we will be visiting again."

"Neither
my wife nor I could actually taste anything we ate.
Seriously. We aren't Vindaloo types, but there really was no
variation - it was bland with a capital B.
We came out thinking "That was a waste of £45". The
restaurant was empty (20:00 - 21:45) on 11th December - wouldn't you
think that a Central Manchester Indian Restaurant would have been
even a bit busy if it was any good? How this get in the top 10 restaurants
in Manchester is either a miracle or a fiddle. I have had better food
delivered to the door, cheaper. Leave this one alone."

"A
good quality restaurant with friendly staff.
I'm not convinced about the Bollywood style background music and the
videos on two big TV screens but the food's good
and the place is comfortable and relaxed."

"Very
polite staff who made our meal very enjoyable. The
Twilight Menu is a real bargain, ideal if you were off to
the theatre afterwards. two courses for under 6 quid. and tasty
ample portions with it. Good quality food.
Will definately be back."

"I
couldn't fault the restaurant. The food was excellent
and the service impeccable. I would have normally
been concerned going into somewhere that was off the beaten track
and in the basement but I would have missed out on a real treat if
I had followed my instinct! I'm visiting Manchester for 3 nights and
I'm considering visiting again!"

"Lights
of India is a really nice restaurant with friendly
knowledgeable staff, set in a nice modern environment
and with great prices. We took advantage of the 'Twilight
Offer' this gave us 2 courses for just under £6! Very hard to
beat for quality food like this at what is certainly
one of Manchester's best Indian restaurants."

"We
visited Lights Of India before going to the Royal Exchange, just around
the corner, through the famous 'secret passage' which joins South
King Street with St Annes Square. The pre-theatre menu was incredible!
For just £5.95 we had two excellent courses
- I opted for the beautiful Chicken Chat pancake and the Lamb Corma
- whilst my partner had a Bhaji and the Chicken Corma. It's incredible
how they can serve food as good as this at such ridiculously
low prices whilst still offering large portions - especially
considering you get a free shot of Bailey's with the bill. Fantastic!
Up there with Akbar's and Shimla Pinks for quality of the
dishes, we will be certainly be returning next time we visit the Exchange
or Opera House."

"Went
with a friend on a Tuesday night - so it was quiet in town anyway.
Whilst the service and food were of a high standard,
and despite the fact we were given quite a few free shots
of Brandy and Baileys - I agree with some previous reviews
that there needed to be more meat in the main dishes
- I only had about 3- 4 small pieces of chicken and my friend indicated
the same with his Lamb dish, this being masked by the vegetables in
the sauce."

"Horrible
bright neon lights outside may put some off visiting this
superb Indian restaurant - those that decide not to venture down the
stairs though will miss out on a great culinary experience.
Very friendly, clean and inviting restaurant with
some great special offers, including the Twighlight
Special which we had of 2 courses for only £5.95. My lamb korma
was very tasty although could have done with
some more meat - at £5.95 though I was hardly complaining."

"very
nice restaurant. Great food. We even got
a free shot of Bailey's and a little chololate bar with the
bill. The manager is very friendly, and offered us brandy when we
were about to leave. I will be returning :) "

"Wonderful
restaurant in a great location - behind the fashionable shops
on King Street and only a stone's throw from the theatres and MEN
Arena. Ignore the bright neon light facade and venture
down the stairs to experience some of the best Indian food
in Manchester. The quality of the food is up there, if not
better, than Akbars, EastZEast and Shimla Pink's whilst the
service is second to none. The owner, Shanar, is very
friendly and like the previous reviewer says, rather generous
with his free brandy. Superb - highly recommended!"

"This
is a hidden gem of a restaurant well worth
a visit. I was entertaining clients so the impression the
place gives is all important to me. Clean and relaxed without
being understated, after all, you are there to eat. And eat
we did, in some style. There are several signature dishes here not
served elsewhere. I met the owner Shanar - who not only took time
out to explain some of his dishes to us, but passed a little time
with us to ask us our business, a simple but gratifying token appreciated
by my clients.
Those of you yet to make it to this delightful restaurant should check
out the Twighlight Special currently running from Mondays to Saturdays
4pm - 6.30pm and Sundays 4 til 11pm. 2 courses only £5.95.
What more can I say except take advantage - your taste buds will be
dancing with delight"

"I
have to admit. Before visiting this restaurant I held the belief that
it would be nowhere near the quality that the likes of Akbars, EastZEast
and Shimla Pinks are serving. Maybe it's the rather off putting bright
neon lights outside, somewhat less refined than the old 39 Steps signage
that used to be here, or possibly because there doesn't seem to be
the same amount of 'buzz' as the others have generated. For me though
it is quite possibly the best Indian meal I've had in Manchester
- and that is saying something as I never expected to visit anywhere
better than Akbar's. There's no big naan breads like at Akbars and
EastZEast, nor is the decor as plush (the toilets are tiny too). The
food is superb however and the service better than
the aforementioned. The prices are incredible, generally
slightly more expensive than Akbars but they were advertising a business
lunch, 2 courses for just £3.95. You also get
free drinks with the bill and on the night we visited,
the owner, Shanar, invited us for a brandy 'on the house'
as we were leaving. Very highly recommended!"
