Restaurant Bella Roma - reader comments

"Had an excellent evening with my husband at Bella Roma. Steaks were cooked to perfection and lovely veg. Nice bottle of wine. Staff were polite and friendly. Will definately go back soon." - ostuni, manchester - 20/4/08 (visited on a saturday evening)

"It was a terrible place, the floor and glasses were dirty, stale desserts, burnt pizza, they even messed up the bill." - stacy, liverpool - 19/3/08 (visited on a monday lunch)

"Wish I'd read the reviews before visiting. Complete shambles. Visited with my wife and two children. We ordered starters but when mine came it was not what I had ordered. When this was pointed out the waitress she apologised and took it away again. The others finished their starters and the waitress then arrived with the main courses. I pointed out to her that I hadn't had my starter yet and she took the mains away again. In a few minutes my starter finally arrived. It was Pasta & Bean Soup, but it didnt contain any pasta. Nevertheless it tasted OK. Our mains then arrived. My wife had ordered a Chicken & Spicy Sausage dish, only problem was it had no spicy sausage in it. I had ordered a pizza with additional hot chillies as suggested in the menu and surprise surprise, there were no chillies on it. We definitely won't ever eat here again." - alan ogle, northern ireland - 5/3/08 (visited on a saturday evening)

"Our fried sardine starter was still frozen. When we complained they didn't give any apology whatsoever. The staff were very rude and ill mannered. The manager was too afraid to come and speak to us so we had to go over to him. They didn't charge us for the starters but they did add a 10% service charge that we noticed (thank goodness) and got removed. One of our group had been here before and had ordered a vegetarian dish which contained sausage. When she queried it, they said that they'd added it 'for flavour'. She gave this place a chance because generally the food is ok but they really don't seem to be able to cope with large numbers of customers. I won't go back there because of the rudeness and lack of apology. Everyone makes mistakes but that is unacceptable." - rachel chatwin, manchester - 27/10/07 (visited on a saturday evening)

"I would never go back there again. It was well overpriced for what we got." - claire, manchester - 4/7/07 (visited on a Weds evening)

"I submitted a review of Bella Roma below after experiencing a nice meal for 2 a few weeks ago. As a result of my previous visit I decided to hold my birthday party here for 15 of us. I read a review on this page that they couldn't cope but didnt believe it as it was nice when just the 2 of us visited. I was very wrong - it took over an hour to get our order in and well over an hour for our starter to come. One of the party found plastic in her food and still got charged. One child's pizza was full of chilli and spice when it was asked specifically to be plain. The manager was extremely argumentative and wanted to know why we had left the food. The mother of the child had no problem whatsoever and was willing to pay for it and forget it. The manager came to the table over 6 times demanding to know the problem which caused upset and we all left disgusted after paying the bill which they charged extras on. They decide when they feel like they understand English. They certainly understood it when they wanted paying. They ruined my whole evening. Thank God that the little girl didnt have allergies to chilli etc otherwise there would have been a serious problem, not just one the manager had made up. My whole night was totally ruined - I wished I had listened to the previous reviewer - avoid at all costs." - sheryl ritchie, manchester - 4/7/07 (visited on a Wednesday evening)

"The manager was really nice. He let us have the special of the day even though we were a bit late. The food was plentiful and everything was cooked brilliantly. Left a great taste in your mouth! We had no complaints whatsoever and staff were friendly. You can see the chefs cooking. You get free wine with your meal - bargain price. Lovely little place. We will definately be going back soon. Well recommended food. We had the special which was a starter, I had mushrooms, hubby had garlic bread. Main was chicken with gorgeous cooked massive potatoes, sauce, courgettes, crunchy veg and pepperoni with a glass of wine or beer each. Well worth it, we had a lovely time." - sheryl ritchie, manchester - 13/6/07 (visited on a Friday evening)

"We went to this as a party of 21. The restaurant could not cope. It had squashed us in. Nobody could get past. The service was slow and the bill was incorrect. I think if you are a party of 2 or 4, would be ok, but definately, not for larger groups." - Sharon Hassall, Audenshaw - 20/9/06 (visited on a Saturday evening)

Trusted Reviewer "Having only seen bad reviews of this place, I've always avoided it. Late one rainy night however it appeared to be the only place open so we stumbled in. It appeared we'd walked in on an argument between the manager and a party of Italian business men. As most Italian's look like they're arguing when they're talking we sat down nonetheless. The angry businessmen left, still arguing as they went and the manager then decided to pick a fight with another customer, whom he thought was American. When she told him she was from Canada, he laughed and apologised for his mistake, telling her in pidgen English, 'I doesn't like Americans'. Then it was our turn. He came over to apologise for the big scene he'd made earlier (not realising we hadn't actually seen any big scene - more's the pity). And as if the welcome wasn't bad enough, the food was simply terrible. I had Calzone, which reminded me of those pizza's you used to make in Home Economics at school. The salad was brown and the mineral water I ordered was delivered in the plastic bottle it was obviously bought at Spa in (with around a 500% mark up on the price). As every other review of this place says, stay well clear! The worst restaurant in Manchester by a mile!" - James, Manchester - 1/6/06 (visited on a Thursday after 11pm
